Watch Around Water

Drowning is the leading cause of preventable death in children under five years of age. According to the Life Saving Victoria Drowning Report 2016/17 there was a 6% increase in the drowning rate for children aged four years and under.

Aquarena has recently become a Watch Around Water endorsed centre. The Watch Around Water initiative is an education and public awareness campaign which focuses on active supervision, and encouraging parents / guardians to take on the responsibility of this role while visiting aquatic facilities. It does this by outlining mandatory policies for adequate supervision of children while they are in our centre to ensure they are able to swim in a safe environement.

The campaigns aim is to reduce the number of fatal and non-fatal drowning incidents and associated injuries in public aquatic facilities in Victoria within the 0-14 year age group.

Mandatory Policies

1. Children under 10 years old:

  • must be accompanied into the centre by a responsible parent / guardian
  • must be constantly and actively supervised
  • must wear a wrist band provided to them at reception on entry

The parent / guardian must be positioned to have a clear view of the child with no physical or structural barriers between them and the child / children.

2. Children under 5 years old:

  • must be accompanied into the centre by a responsible parent / guardian
  • must be constantly and actively supervised during recreational play within arms reach
  • must wear a wrist band provided to them at reception on entry

3. Children over 10 years old:

  • For children 10 years and older, parents must use their knowledge of the child's swimming ability and general development to determine the level of accompaniment required.
