Aquarena Redevelopment (Overview)

Centre 11th April 2016

In 2006 Manningham City Council endorsed a Master Plan for the Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre, to guide the future planning and provision of aquatic and leisure services, programs and facilites at the centre.

The redevelopment construction works at Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre are now nearing completion (see image above: 11/04/2016).

The redevelopments will ensure that Aquarena meets the needs of the community and people of all ages and abilities now and into the future.

The project includes:

  • Major redevelopment of the entrance foyer
  • Development of interactive water play areas
  • Redevelopment of the waterslide
  • New club rooms for local swim clubs
  • Upgrading the existing diving pool
  • Development of a new program pool to increase learn to swim and warm water therapy opportunities
  • An additional multipurpose dry program space for health and fitness classes
  • Increased childcare facilities
  • Improved change room facilities for families, people with disabilities, and a dedicated school change room area
  • Improved car parking

In March 2009, implementation of stages one to six of the Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre Master Plan began.

Stages 1,2, 3 and 3A of the project are now complete.

Stages one to six included the construction of:

  • New school change rooms, first aid room and offices;
  • Refurbishment of the existing "wet" change rooms;
  • Construction of the new swim club rooms including additional dry program space;
  • Installation of a new waterslide; and
  • Refurbishment of the existing waterslide and outdoor diving pool and the construction of a new plant room and associated equipment including the installation of a cogeneration system.

Where We Are Now

Ireland Brown Constructions have been appointed to implement the remaining three stages of the Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre Master Plan.

The implementation of Stages 4,5 & 6 includes;

  • Construction of a new indoor Warm Water Program Pool and pool hall including new steam room and spa - designed with an integrated spa offering access for patrons of all abilities. A ramp access and stair to allow access to the pool that has a depth from 1100mm to 1400mm
  • Construction of a new outdoor Water Splash and Play area - located between the existing indoor pool hall and the new outdoor plant room, the outdoor play area will feature water activities for children of all ages
  • Construction of a new Wellness Centre inclusive of a Multi-purpose room - located on the ground floor, providing opportunities for consulting suites for allied health services with the multi-purpose room catering for a range of health and fitness functions.
  • Expansion and relocation of the gymnasium - the relocation from the ground floor to the first floor will see the gymnasium facilities at Aquarena doubling in size. The larger area will enable the introduction of new forms of functional training equipment that will compliment the traditional cardio, free weights and pin loaded equipment. The gymnasium will also offer additional fitness assessment rooms
  • Extensive redevelopment of the Entrance Foyer, Administration Zone, and Reception Area - the entry foyer provides a link between the Wellness Centre, administration area and main reception and will provide strong visual connections into the existing indoor pool hall and the new warm water program pool. The new reception area offers exclusive automated member access to streamline entry into the facility
  • Modification works to the existing crèche area - a dedicated "sleeping room" will complement the existing crèche facilities
  • Expansion and refurbishment of the existing dry change areas - associated with the new gymnasium facilities on Level One, the existing dry change rooms will be fully redeveloped to provide wet amenities and a dry change area "restricted to Gold Members Only" access. The members change will incorporate locker facilities and two fully compliant accessible toilet and shower facilities
  • Redevelopment of the external drop off and pick up zones including the establishment of a new forecourt - the construction of the new warm water program pool at the entrance of the facility has triggered the need to redevelop the existing turning circle and drop off and pick up zones. The redevelopment of this area will provide a more accessible vehicle access zone that will incorporate Accessible Car Parking spaces, Permit Zone Bays, a dedicated Taxi Zone and bicycle parking zones.
  • Construction of a Sky Bridge linking visitors from the upper car park levels to the facility - the new accessible bridge pathway linking the existing lower level car park to the Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre, has been designed to enable pedestrian access to the new gymnasium area via a sky lobby. Once inside, internal lifts and a staircase provide visitors with access to all functional areas of the facility. A realignment of the existing lower level car park will increase car parking and Accessible Car Parking spaces.

Project Implementation

It is anticipated that the implementation of Stages 4,5 & 6 of the Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre Master Plan will commence in August 2014 and take approximately 20 to 22 months to complete with the opening of the new facilities now scheduled for Friday, 1st July 2016.

Business As Usual

Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre will continue to operate as per usual during the implementation period. Different stages of the construction process may however cause occasional disruptions to some programs and services for short periods of time.
